James E. Barry, 75, of Marshall Avenue, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Warren, died Wednesday, July 7, at Arizona Heart Hospital, after a short illness. He was the husband of Juana (Weber) Barry.
Born and raised in Warren, the son of the late James and Stella (Cyganowski) Barry, he had lived in Phoenix for many years. He had attended the former Warren High School, where he was a member of the state champion baseball teams of 1945 and 1946, and later had played baseball
professionally, with one of the Boston Red Sox farm teams, until the early 1950s. Mr. Barry had been inducted into the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame.
He entered the banking profession in 1956, in Phoenix, and before retiring had served as president and chief executive officer for a number of financial institutions, some of which he had helped to establish.
A civic leader in Phoenix for many years, he had served as a member of the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, helping to gain international status for Sky Harbor Airport, had been a member of the board of trustees of Arizona State University, and had been active in many other community
organizations.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Nadine Williams of Phoenix; two sons, Patrick Barry in New York and Collin Barry in Colorado; a brother, Robert J. Barry, and a sister, Bertha Lial, both of Warren; and three grandchildren. He was the father of the late Terrence Barry.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated for Mr. Barry on Sunday, Aug. 1, at 7:15 a.m., in St. Mary-of-the-Bay Church, Main Street, Warren. |
