WILLIAM “WINKY” CORREIA (Athlete, Class of 1999, Posthumous)
Winky Correia was the star third baseman on Warren High School’s 1939 Class C and State Baseball Champions, the first Class C team in any sport to win a state title.
In recognition of his efforts he was honored as the All Class C and All State third baseman. Then in 1940 Warren High captured the Class C Eastern Baseball title, but lost in the Class C finals to Cumberland. Winky was rewarded with All Class C honors and was in the running for All State honors until the team’s untimely loss. He was named an All Class C football halfback in 1939, when Warren almost pulled off “one of the greatest upsets of the (season behind Winky’s) one-man demonstration of clear-cut football ability.” Away from high school he starred for the Warren Narries from 1939 to 1941; in the first of those years they defeated the Riverside Barons, 6-0, as Winky caught a touchdown pass before he was ejected for a fistic demonstration. (It seems that he liked to argue) He played in the Warren versus Bristol Baseball Little World Series in both 1939 and 1940 and was a member of the Crown Zippers nine that captured the regular season 1941 Rhode Island Baseball League Championship. Winky tragically died in a bomber crash over Saipan in the Pacific in the last days of World War Two. Picture from Hall of Fame archives (1939 Baseball State Championship team)
