WILLIAM C. “BILL” WILLIS (Contributor, Class of 2000, Posthumous)
One of the founders of the Warren Midget Football League, Bill served his adopted town in many ways. As a senior non-commissioned officer with Company D of the National Guard, Bill was a member of Guard state champions in basketball, softball, and large bore rifle. In 1958 he and Sam Correia founded the Midget Football League. Bill served as the league’s president off and on for the next twenty years and also was its secretary. He coached the Redskins to Midget League championships in 1960, 1961, and 1964 and helped lead the Junior Midgets to the state’s Eastern Division crown of 1976.
In Little League Baseball Bill succeeded fellow Hall of Fame member Fred Jannitto, Sr. as the league’s president after having earlier managed the Red Sox to a championship. Bill served on the board of directors of the King Philip Basketball Tournament, was a Bristol County Junior Rifle Club instructor, and coached the St. Pius Circle five to the New England Catholic Youth Organization Championship in 1963. He was a long-time Scoutmaster for the Rotary-sponsored Boy Scout troop in Warren.
