1974 WARREN HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TRACK STATE CHAMPIONS (Team Class of 2004)
Ann Chandler Morris has called the Warren High 1974 girls track team “the best team I ever coached, whether in cross country, gymnastics, or track.”
After capturing the Northeast Division Championship over Bay View and others, the Redskins repeated as State Champions, with their 56 ½ points nearly doubling the score of runner-up North Kingstown. Individual events were won by Laurie Figureid in the 50-yard hurdles, the mile run, and the long jump (the first two in state record time; she already held the state record in the long jump); Karyn McCahey in the 50-yard dash and the 100-yard dash (she already held the state record in both events); Shirley Rose in the 220-yard dash (in state record time), and Lauren Pelchat in the discus (with a state record distance). In addition, Laurie Figureid, Karyn McCahey, and Shirley Rose joined with Laurie’s sister June to capture the 440-yard relay in state record time. Laurie Figureid was named the Outstanding Senior High School Girl for the 1974 track season. (Karyn McCahey had captured this honor in 1973, while she and Laurie had shared the honor in their sophomore season of 1972.) Named All State were June Figureid, Laurie Figureid, Karyn McCahey, Lauren Pelchat, Beth Penkala (second in the discus), and Shirley Rose. All of them achieved All State honors in at least one other season. The entire team (with married names where available) comprised Karen Cabral Booth (who was All State in the 1973 440-yard relay), Trudy Cabral, Ann Hackley Cardenas (who was All State in the 1975 440-yard relay), Cheryl Keyes Coffey (who was All-State in the 1975 440-yard relay), Diane Abbruzzi Gemp (who was All State in the 1972 440-yard relay) Judy Heaney, Ginny Hindle, Karyn McCahey Monti, Kathy O’Donnell, Pam Oliver, Lauren Pelchat, Beth Penkala, Nancy Burns Piper, Shirley Rose, Laurie Figureid Ross, June Figureid Sampson, and coach Ann Chandler Morris. Individual members of the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame are Karyn McCahey Monti, Beth Penkala, Shirley Rose, Laurie Figureid Ross, and coach Ann Chandler Morris.
