WARREN HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL 1946 (Team, Class of 2007)
Coached by Charlie Burdge, who had recently returned to Warren after serving in the United States Army during World War Two, the 1946 Baseball Redskins defeated perennial rival Burrillville, 8-6, in the Class C Title game. In the state playoffs they bested both Class A La Salle (2-1) and Class B West Warwick (3-2 in twelve innings and 6-3) to win the State Championship. Amazingly this was the third time in eight years that the school with the smallest male enrollment in Rhode Island had captured top baseball honors in the state. In the ninth inning of the La Salle game, shortstop Mendy Mendillo made a great catch of a line drive to open the frame, while the second out was garnered when catcher Harpo Tavares threw out a runner attempting to steal second base. In the first win over West Warwick, Warren scored two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, before winning in the twelfth on a two-out single by Duck Muccino. During the playoffs Ace Boulanger allowed one earned run in thirty-four innings while striking out thirty-seven hitters. The team consisted of pitcher Ace Boulanger, catcher Harpo Tavares, first baseman Gerry Sampson, first baseman/pitcher Ted Wyrostek, second baseman Buzz Barry, shortstop Mendy Mendillo, third baseman Duck Muccino, left fielder/pitcher Pat Barba, center fielder Jim Barry, right fielder Leon Urban, Lou Alfano, Dizzy Barry, Charlie Bartlett, Lou Denault, Jim Doherty, Jim Henneberry, Jake Lombardi, Fred Mello, Hank Poitras, and Bill Servant. Sophomore center fielder Jim Barry and junior pitcher Ace Boulanger were elected to the All State team. This was the third straight year that a Warren hurler had been named to the All State first team (1944 and 1945 Roger Higgins; 1946 Ace Boulanger), a remarkable streak that continued in 1947 when Boulanger was again named the first team All State pitcher. And in his senior year of 1948 Jim Barry led the state in hitting with an average of .508. It is no wonder that on more than one occasion, the Providence Journal-Bulletin described Warren as the baseball capital of the Rhode Island. Brothers Buzz and Jim Barry, Ace Boulanger, assistant coach Donat Brochu, coach Charlie Burdge, Bill Servant, and Harpo Tavares are individual members of the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame.
