Walter J. Nencka, Jr.  (Athlete, Class of 2006)

In 1980 Wally Nencka was the Warren Schoolboy Soccer League’s leading scorer in Division One with thirteen (13) goals.

He made Little League Baseball All Star teams six years running, starting with the ten-year-old Stars in 1981 and finishing with the fourteen-fifteen-year-old Stars in 1986.

At La Salle he was a starting outfielder in his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons, captained the team in his final year, represented La Salle in the Inter-Division All Star game, and led his nine in hits, home runs, and stolen bases over that period.  In 1989 he was named to the 1st All Metropolitan Division baseball team.

During the summers of 1988 and 1989 he started for Alegria’s American Legion baseball team.

In basketball Wally was a member of the varsity in each of his final two seasons.  And then, in his only football campaign (1988), he was named a 1st team All State and 1st team All Division One defensive back.  During that year he had ten interceptions, with four of them coming against the All State wide receiver from Cumberland.

At graduation he was named La Salle’s Vincent A. Nugent Athlete of the Year for the 1988-1989 school year.

Moving on to Springfield College, he was a two-year starter at cornerback, once earning ECAC Division Two player of the week honors.

Wally played in the Warren Basketball League for the multi-championship New England Tool.  In 1991, when his team captured both the regular season and playoff titles, he scored thirty-seven (37) points in the final contest and was named to the League’s All Stars.
