STEPHEN CAIZZI (Athlete, Class of 2003)
Steve Caizzi won the state football scoring championship in 1978, a year in which he scored all forty points in Warren High School’s defeat of Portsmouth High. The state’s coaches recognized this achievement by naming him to their All State eleven. In a final-game loss to Tiverton, Steve was hit while punting, and his knee ligaments were torn; however, no penalty was called because “the referee thought that he was acting.” In both his junior and season seasons he was named a running back on the All Class B Small first team. He also received Eastern Division baseball honors in his senior year.
At the University of Rhode Island (URI), Steve’s accomplishments included a 4.4 yards per carry average as a sophomore, seventy-four yard punts versus both Massachusetts and Brown, the fifth highest punting average in the University’s history, and seven rushing touchdowns in his senior year.
An All Yankee Conference second team running back, he was subsequently given honorable mention on URI’s All 1980s squad.
Other items of note: Steve captured the Warren Little League triple crown of 1973 with thirteen home runs, forty-seven runs batted in, and a .628 batting average. And in 1987 he won the AAU East Coast Body Building Tall Category Championship.
