ROBBIE STRICKLAND (Athlete, Class of 2006)
In 2006 Robbie Strickland was a member of the Special Olympics National team that captured a gold medal in basketball.
But this was to be expected. In 1992 Robbie helped lead his 4x100 meter relay team to the championship of both the Special Olympics East Bay Area Games and the Rhode Island Games.
In ensuing years he won Rhode Island medals in the softball throw, the 4x200 relay, the 100 meter run, and (again) the 4x100 relay. At the East Bay Area Games, his gold medals are too numerous to detail, but they included (sometimes multiple) victories in the 50 meter run, the 100 meter run, the 400 meter run, the long jump, the softball throw, and the 4x200 relay, in addition to the 4x100 relay.
Robbie was named Special Olympics Rhode Island Outstanding Athlete in 1996. And in 2003, as a member of the USA World team competing at the Special Olympics World Games, he won the championship in the 100-meter run.
In 2006, Robbie was a member of the first ever USA National Games in Ames, Iowa.
Subsequent Information: Also in 2010, Robbie participated in the U.S. National Special Olympic Games as a runner in the torch relay. The relay, known as the USA National Games Law Enforcement Torch Run is a prestigious event which members must be nominated.
