PAUL HARVEY (Athlete, Class of 1999)

Warren High’s best athlete in the 1950s, Paul Harvey earned eleven of twelve possible varsity letters.

An All Class C football halfback in 1952, he was awarded the O’Connor and Kane trophy as the Outstanding Class C Football Player.  In 1953 Paul again earned All Class C honors and, in addition, was named All State.  During that season he accounted for eleven touchdowns (nine rushing and two passing) in back-to-back games, one against neighboring rival Barrington.

In the winter of his senior year he was a member of the All Class C basketball team at the guard position.

After playing for the Rhode Island Semi-Pro Football Champions Grande Club in 1954 and 1955, Paul joined the United States Army and was a member of the Second Army team that captured the Alaska Service Championship in 1956 and 1957.

He played outfield for the Federal Engineers/Smith’s Drug fast-pitch softball team that won six consecutive titles from 1956 to 1961.

Later in life Paul won the Barrington YMCA racquetball title in 1975, 1976, and 1980.  He has also been a golf champion.

In 1988 and 1989 he served as a Warren High assistant football coach under Pat Abbruzzi.

During the 1953 high school football season Paul and two teammates “sampled” some pies baked by the home economics class that were sitting on either a window sill or a classroom counter.  According to him, he only stood guard outside the room, while his teammates climbed through the transom that was located above all classroom doors.  Whatever the “true facts,” the local newspapers picked up this story and ran headlines about “The Pie Caper.”
