NICK MASSA, JR.   (Coach  Class of 2007)

Nick Massa was a very good athlete, as evidenced by his selection as the 1952 Bristol County League All Star shortstop while playing for the Warren Chiefs, but it was as a coach (and more) that Nick sparkled.

In Little League baseball he coached both the Red Sox and the Mets, helping lead the latter nine to the 1973 Championship.  That same year he also managed the Babe Ruth League’s Rotary team.

He coached the Midget League Giants and the Pop Warner League Midget Redskins from 1960 to 1975, a year when he also served as the local team’s Vice President.  During that period the Giants were multiple league winners and his 1971 team captured the state’s Eastern Division Co-Championship.

In the Warren Softball League Nick starred in five decades.  He played for the Moe’s Tap 1970 title team and then served as catcher/coach for the 1995 (yes, 1995!) regular season and playoff Champions Perella’s/Magic Carpet nine.  In that latter year he was old enough to be the father of all of his teammates.

Among Nick’s other contributions to the athletic fabric of Warren were the following: Recreation Board chairman, Men’s and Women’s Softball League umpire-in-chief, and coach of the 1993 Pop Warner Northeast Rhode Island Junior Midget Champions.
