MILT JOHNSON (Old Timer, Class of 2010, Posthumous)
In Warren High School’s second year of organized football (1930), Milt Johnson, who normally played tackle, threw a seventy-five-yard touchdown pass to Sheik Dallaire in a 7-0 defeat of Barrington. At the end of the season, he was named first team All Class B. (The Warren and Barrington Gazette later named him a member of a Warren All Star football squad for the eight years ending in 1936.)
The following spring the school’s baseball team posted a mediocre season, but Milt’s performance in right field was so impressive that he was named to both All Class B and All State squads. Not having anything to do on Saturdays during the spring, he competed on the outdoor track squad and earned All Class B honors in the javelin, shot put, and discus. As was required of many families during the Depression, Milt’s family then had to move, and they relocated to East Providence, where he played for the Townies in his senior year. While there he earned All State and All Class A honors in both football and outdoor track, in the process setting the state twelve-pound shot put record of more than forty-five feet. Milt’s family then returned to Warren, and he matriculated at the University of New Hampshire. In Durham he competed in the field events on the school’s track team, captained the freshmen football team, and was named captain of the varsity squad for his senior season.
