MANUEL L. (MANNY) LIAL, JR. (Athlete, Class of 1999)
One of New England’s premier skeet shooters, Manny Lial won titles in five consecutive decades. Manny was first a champion at his home East Warren Rod and Club in 1957 and won five more titles there, the last in 1988.
Also in 1957 he was a member of the Rhode Island State Skeet Shooting Two-Man 20-Gauge Championship team, an honor that he achieved three more times. As an individual 20-Gauge shooter he won the state title in 1958 and from 1963 to 1969 with the exception of 1967. The All-Gauge individual category at the Rhode Island level saw Manny come out on top five times between 1959 and 1965, while he was a member of the two-man championship team three times in the 1960s. Manny won eleven titles in either the 410-Gauge or 28-Gauge competitions while shooting either individually or as a partner in a two-man team; he did this during a ten-year period that began in 1959. In 1970 he was a member of a five-man, record-breaking team in the Rhode Island Championships, while he was the state Trap Shooting Doubles Champion in 1975 and the Rhode Island Sporting Clays Senior Champion of 1994. From 1957 to 1996 he won other New England shooting events that are too numerous to mention here. Manny achieved his highest overall score in Rhode Island skeet shooting in 1968 and had the highest annual average in every year from 1959 to 1969 with the exception of 1967.
