LAURIE FIGUREID ROSS (Athlete, Charter Class of 1998)
Laurie Figureid was named the Outstanding Girl in Rhode Island High School Cross Country and Track in five of the six varsity seasons in which she competed. Twice a member of the Mary V. Quirk Junior High State Cross Country Champions, she was the Junior High Champion in cross country, hurdles, long jump, the 440 yard run, and the 440 yard relay. Competing in cross country at Warren High School, Laurie never lost a race, was named the Outstanding Rhode Island Girl in all three seasons, and was named All State from 1971 to 1973.
In track she was also a three-time All Stater. In her sophomore year of 1972 she won the 880 yard run and the long jump in state record performances and was the state’s Co-Outstanding Girl with fellow Hall of Fame member Karyn McCahey. During that summer she won the National Junior Olympics 440 yard run Championship with a time of 55.04. The 1973 high school track season saw Laurie win the 220 yard run, the 440 yard run (in state record time), and the 440 yard relay. Her Warren High team won the State Championship.
1974 saw Warren High win another State Championship and Laurie capture state titles in the 50 yard hurdles, the mile run, and the 440 yard relay, setting state records in all three events. In recognition of her efforts she was again named the Outstanding Girl in Rhode Island track. Picture from Hall of Fame archives
