KARYN MCCAHEY MONTI (Athlete, Class of 2000)

Twice named the Outstanding Girl in Rhode Island senior high school track, Karyn McCahey was the New England Junior Olympic Champion in the long jump and the one hundred-yard dash.

In 1971, while attending Mary V. Quirk Junior High School, Karyn received the Janet Moreau Stone Trophy as the Outstanding Girl in junior high school track.

Moving on to Warren High School she was a member of the 1972 team that finished second in Rhode Island.  Named the state’s Outstanding Girl along with fellow Hall of Fame member Laurie Figureid, Karyn attained All State honors in the fifty-yard dash, the one hundred-yard dash, the long jump, and the four hundred and forty-yard relay.  That summer she was a member of the New England Women’s All Star track team.  Perhaps more importantly she captured the New England Junior Olympics crowns in both the one hundred-yard dash and the long jump.  (Unfortunately she broke her ankle and was unable to go on to the Eastern and/or National Championships.)

In 1973 she was again named the state’s Outstanding Girl after helping to lead Warren High to the state championship.  She was named All State in the same four events in which she had been honored in the previous year: long jump; fifty-yard dash; one hundred-yard dash; and four hundred and forty-yard relay.

Karyn capped off her high school career by participating in Warren High’s 1974 State Girls Track Championship.  She again received All State recognition in the fifty and one hundred-yard dashes, the long jump, and the four hundred and forty-yard relay.

She starred for the Rhode Island Women’s Club at the New England 1974 Indoor Track Championships, capturing first place in both the fifty-yard dash and the sprint relay.  Moving outdoors Karyn won both dashes, at one hundred and two hundred twenty-yards, in the New England Outdoor Track Championships.
