JOHN FLETCHER (Athlete, Class of 2003, Posthumous)
While a student at Moses Brown School, John Fletcher was named an All State wrestler in both 1943 and 1944. In both years he was one a handful of non-Mount Pleasant grapplers who won a state championship.
The captain of his school’s football and wrestling teams in his senior year, John earned eleven varsity letters in football, soccer, track, and wrestling. His college years were spent at the United States Naval Academy, where he was named the Outstanding Eastern Collegiate Wrestler of 1947 and won Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association crowns in both 1947 and 1948. In both of these latter years he received All American recognition. John was a member of the 1948 and 1952 United States Olympic wrestling teams. He was inducted posthumously into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the United States Naval Academy Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Moses Brown Athletic Hall of Fame, where he was a member of that Hall’s inaugural class. John tragically died in an airplane crash while serving in the United States Navy during the 1950s.
