JOHN "JAY" FERREIRA (Contributor, Class of 2011)
More than one neutral observer has described the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame’s website (www.warrenhof.com) as one of the best community websites they have ever seen.
The site was launched by Hall of Fame Committee member Jay Ferreira in 2004. For those who haven’t yet seen it, you should access it at your earliest convenience. For those who have viewed it, you know that it contains biographies of all Hall of Fame individual and team members, historic pictures, interesting stories, lists of all kinds, and articles from local newspapers. It encompasses the most complete look available into Warren’s sports history.
Jay first appeared on Warren’s athletic scene when he was a member of the 1969 Red Sox that won the Little League Baseball Championship. The following year he was named his team’s Most Outstanding Player. And then three years later he was the Babe Ruth League’s All Star first baseman while playing for the Bristol County Lions Co-Championship nine – and in his spare time he helped coach the league’s thirteen-year-old All Stars.
Following high school he tried his hand at slow-pitch softball and over a twenty-six year period played on teams that won more than thirty (30) regular season, tournament, playoff, district, and state titles. In Warren Jay competed for Delekta Pharmacy, Repro-Stat, Steve’s Auto Parts, Market Street Pub, and Perella’s Ristorante/Magic Carpet. He was named a league All Star in back-to-back-to-back seasons of 1985, 1986, and 1987. Among his teammates were fellow Hall of Famers Bob and Nick Massa, John Pimental, and Andy Vollaro. Jay’s teams also were members of leagues in Barrington, Bristol, and East Providence. The Sevigny Construction squad that played in East Providence from 1988 to 1992 was made up of predominantly Warren players. They won three ASA East Bay District Championships and two State Championships and competed in three New England Regional Championships. From 1984 to 1990 Jay served as the Warren Men’s Softball League Commissioner. He was the Co-Tourney Director for the Joseph Jamiel Memorial Softball Tourney for ten years. And for eight years he volunteered as the USSSA East Bay Area Softball Director. (USSSA registered teams in Rhode Island totaled more than five hundred.) When the Town of Warren hosted the National Invitational Tournaments that sent their champions directly to the National Tourney, he served as Assistant Director and Bracketologist. In 1995 Jay was awarded the USSSA Rhode Island Softball Director of the Year designation.
