At the age of 9, Jay began playing organized soccer with the Rhode Island Summer Soccer League. In the next ten years he competed in a number of statewide leagues and was a member of teams that captured six regular season or playoff championships.
At Warren High School he played on the school’s first-ever squad in 1969. Two years later he was named to the Suburban All Stars before earning All Division and All State honors.
The following summer he was selected to be a member of the People-to-People soccer tour of Germany and Switzerland. Jay finished his high school career with thirty-three (33) goals.
Moving on to Worcester Academy, he was the team’s leading scorer, notching five goals in a single contest. At Providence College he started as a freshman and finished as one of the team’s leading scorers with two goals and multiple assists. In flag football he played for the Bristol County League 1978 regular season champions, the Merchants, and two years later was a member of the Steelers, who advanced to the playoff championship game of the Fall River League. Jay became involved with Brown University football in 1978 and for six years served as the photographer for the newsletter that was edited and primarily written by his late father Jay. In 1986 he became a spotter for the team’s public address announcer, a role that he continues to perform to this day. When the Warren Basketball League resumed play after a ten-year hiatus, Jay served as the League’s commissioner for the first three seasons of 1987, 1988, and 1989. At the time he was a member of the Warren Recreation Board, a position that he held for fifteen years. He is a charter member of the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.
