HOWARD I. “HOWIE” MARTIN, SR. (Old Timer, Class of 2002, Posthumous)
A member of Warren’s famous Silk Hats baseball squads, Howie Martin played first and second base on the Inter-State League’s championship teams of 1908 and 1909. As the Silk Hats transitioned into the Warren Shoe town team, he hit the trifecta when he played for the 1912 Manufacturers League Champions.
Often hitting in the second spot in the batting order, he played in seven Warren versus Bristol Baseball Little World Series between 1908 and 1920, helping Warren to a record of five wins and two losses. He hit .300 in the last year in which he competed. Also a competitor in basketball, rugby, and ice polo, Howie moved on to the Twilight Baseball League, where he participated as both a player and manager. When his playing days ended, he served the league as its vice president.
Howie managed Warren Post’s American Legion Baseball team in the first four years of its existence and led the team to the state finals in 1929, 1930, and 1931. He served as the Warren Rod and Gun Club’s president from 1938 to 1954. And in his spare time, he also was the president of the Warren Town Council.
