HENRY CORREIA, SR. (Contributor, Class of 1999, Posthumous)
Henry Correia contributed to the Warren sports scene as a player, business manager, manager, coach, founder, scorer, commissioner, referee, and umpire for more than fifty years.
He participated in the Warren versus Bristol Baseball Little World Series in a variety of roles from 1932 to 1947, serving as the winning manager in 1938, 1939, and 1946. In the Warren Firemen’s and Twilight Baseball Leagues Henry was the player/manager of the Narries, who won the 1931 and 1935 baseball titles. He also managed the Narries to the 1940 softball crown and the 1945 regular season softball championship. In 1946 he managed Kettlety’s Firestones to the softball playoff title. As a football manager Henry led the pre-World War Two Warren Narries and the post-war Warren Townies.
The 1949 season saw Warren’s best effort ever in American Legion Baseball. With a team comprising the best that both Warren and Bristol had to offer, Henry managed Warren Post to both State and Regional Championships before losing in the National Semi-Finals. Among those under his wing were fellow Hall of Fame members Pat Abbruzzi and Billy Servant.
The Catholic churches of Warren formed an Interparochial Basketball League in 1961, and Henry was named the league’s first commissioner. In 1964, the year in which he was honored as the Summer Festival’s first Grand Marshal, Henry coached the St. Mary’s senior basketball team to a 15-3 record. He served as co-commissioner of the 1965 Warren Summer Festival Softball Tourney and the Warren Softball League in 1976. Returning to coaching in 1978, he led the Bristol County Elks to the State Girls Softball Championship. Having umpired and refereed baseball, basketball, football, and softball for more years than could be counted, he finished his service to the community by helping teach special needs children to swim at the Barrington YMCA.
