FRANCIS “TUT” JAMIEL (Athlete, Class of 2001)

Perhaps Warren High School’s most famous transfer athlete, Tut Jamiel starred on the first of Pat Abbruzzi’s four consecutive football championship teams of the 1970s.

Tut’s first athletic accomplishments came in soccer.  Playing for the Blue Bombers of the Rhode Island Soccer League, Tut played on three title squads coached by Jay Barry.

Enrolling at Newport’s De La Salle Academy he was an All Class offensive back for the Crusaders’ Class C-South Champions of 1970.  Then, thank God, the Academy dropped football, and Tut transferred to Warren High.

After being named the Outstanding Offensive Back in his summer camp age group, he repeated as an All Class C offensive back (and linebacker).  Then in 1972 he averaged seven yards a carry and led the undefeated Redskins to the Class C Championship.  Having finished second in the state in scoring, Tut was named All Class C and All State.

In the winter of 1973 he joined the Warren High wrestling team that finished the season undefeated and won the Suburban East and Suburban Championships.  In a narrow win over Hendricken, Tut was slammed illegally to the mat and, when he was unable to continue because of a concussion (Warren High nurse Ella Barry said so!), he was declared the match-deciding winner on a forfeit.

Having coached the Midget Football League PeeWees in 1971, Tut embarked on a twenty-years plus association with the Schoolboy Indoor Soccer League.  He coached six title teams over three decades.

He enrolled at Brown University and was a member of that school’s 1976 Ivy League Football Champions.  He scored the go-ahead touchdown in the 28-12 defeat of Cornell.  This team was inducted into the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, but Tut had already been honored for his football achievements.  Upon graduation he was awarded the Broomhead Memorial Trophy for continuous and generous contributions to Brown athletics, as well as loyal devotion to the community.

Tut played flag and tackle football and softball during his twenties and was a member of the Merchants eleven that captured the Bristol County Touch Football League Regular Season Championship in 1978.
