CURT CHAPPELLE (Old Timer, Class of 2003, Posthumous)

In 1931 the Warren Gazette called Curt Chappelle “the best pitcher the town of Warren ever turned out.”

Curt competed in all eight Little World Series that were played between 1899 and 1913, hitting .302 in 1902 and .385 in 1913.

“Our human cannon” pitched and played the outfield for the Silk Hats and Warren Shoe nines that captured state-wide championships in 1908, 1909, and 1912.  In the second of those three years he was the captain of the Silk Hats squad that won the Inter-State League Championship in a close battle with Bristol.

Curt first appeared on the local sports scene in 1899, when he was a member of the winning Little World Series baseball team against Bristol and scored four touchdowns in Warren High School’s defeat of the Bristol High rugby football squad.

The following year he starred for the Warren Townies rugby football team that finished second in Rhode Island to a team from South Providence.  Earlier that season he was given a watch for “his fine play” for the town baseball nine.
